INT. A LARGE HIGHSCHOOL AUDITORIUM - DAY
It’s a clear afternoon in May. A young boy about age 17 sits a well worned black grand piano. He plays some pop music. The camera pans around to face a doorway in which a small figure stands and watches. SHE quietly approaches as he continues to play.
His name is James. Hers, Lucy. During a final chorus of “Chloe Dancer” he looks up and notices Lucy who is intently watching him with a small smile on her face. He stops playing.
LUCY
Ya know, we might be the only people in this
school that recognize that song.
JAMES
Actually, Mr. Brace came in before and noticed it...
about a minute ago only. Crazy.
LUCY moves aroundthe piano to sit on the bench next to JAMES. She gently rests her head on his right shoulder.
LUCY
I heard you were upset before. What happened?
JAMES
(clearly uncomfortable)
Just an annoying doctor visit.
LUCY
(Looks with a clear message of
“I don’t believe you.”)
Ok.
LUCY touches a note on the piano and begins to pluck out the only thing she knows how to play: “Welcome to the Black Parade.” JAMES smiles accordingly.
JAMES
(Half laughing)
Can I just teach you already so you
don’t keep playing that?
LUCY
(playfully, like a four year old)
No!
LUCY than looks right at the floor. The camera looks right at her face and we see her smile slowly fade away as she sighs a sigh of “Here we go...”
LUCY
I’m pregnant
JAMES
(not hearing the first time)
Hmmmm?
LUCY
(look up and directly at him)
James, I’m pregnant.
JAMES looks forward blankly. His mind rushing with a million derams that are fading away. He moves his hands to the keyboard as if to play again. But just rests them at a starting position. He can’t even utilize his one tool of solace.
JAMES
How?
LUCY
You know how.
JAMES
(clearly very frustrated)
When did you know?
LUCY
I took a home test about a week ago and went to
the doctor this morning to double check I wasn’t
going to firighten you if it was nothing.
(a beat)
JAMES
What are you going to do?
LUCY
(confused)
What do you mean “you”? Don’t you mean
“we”?
JAMES
No. I mean ‘you.’ What are you going
to do. It’s your baby. It’s in you.
You decide.
LUCY is completely taken back by this and is unsure of what to say back. She stands up and moves to the front row of chairs in the auditorium. After a few moments of JAMES in silence she gets up and beings to walk out.
JAMES
Do you remember when we sat and watched
the sun rise?
LUCY
Of course.
JAMES
Remember what you said to me?
LUCY
(slightly confused)
I just told you how much i love
and adore you.
JAMES
(almost emotionlessly)
You said, “James, you’re the one.
I realized it last night when I spoke to my
brother. You’re the one i will be with forever
and I’m going to marry you. I couldn’t
see anyone being as perfect for each other
as you are for me.”
LUCY is stunned by the power of his memory of that one moment. She walks to him and sits down next to him, wraps her arms around him and kisses him on the cheek. He wont’ turn and face her. She grabs his face gently and turns him. His eyes immediately shift downward and away from hers.
LUCY
Babe, why are you bringing this up?
JAMES
Forget it.
LUCY
James. This is serious, what are
we going to do?
(a beat)
JAMES
(Yelling)
YOU’RE 17! IS THERE ANY OTHER CHOICE?!
LUCY
What? That’s it. Like that...kill it and we move on?
How am I supposed to be ok with that?
This is in me, not you. Inconvenient or not, this is
something we can just take a second and say “ok that’s it
we’re ready.”
JAMES
We can’t have a baby! We’re not even in senior year!
I don’t see another choice at all? How are you suppoed
be on the swim team at all? What am I supposed to do?
Bring the baby to the swim meet? I can see it now
“National High School Swim Team Wins Gold and attends
teammate's baptism.”
LUCY
Stop it. You’re being ridiculous. Just calm down
(a beat)
I know we can’t have a child at this point.
The choice is...well...that. Or adoption.
JAMES
You’re willing to walk around school
with a bowling ball under your shirt?
LUCY
Yes...but only if you are willing to as well.
JAMES
What?
LUCY
We’re in this together. People are gonna
realize it’s yours very fast.
JAMES
Just cause I’m going out with you. I see.
LUCY
What are you takling about?
JAMES
Let me ask you, when he brought you back
to his house...did you know then? Or
did you just go with the moment?
LUCY
What’s wrong with you!?
JAMES gets up and walks towards the door. LUCY speaks before he hits the door frame and he stops at the sound of her voice.
LUCY
(yelling)
JAMES! What are you doing?!
(doesn’t answer or turn around)
LUCY
JAMES!!!
JAMES
(small beat)
I went to the doctor today as well.
He told me I’m sterile.
Fade to black.
